We recently began a new chapter with alt-rock band Beach Weather when they dropped a couple of singles back in May and July. With “High In Low Places,” which was released in May, the band brought us to a world where chaos was happening all around but love held everything together. In July, they followed up the single with “Hottest Summer on Record,” a sweet and spicy track that touches on nostalgia and innocence. Today, they reveal that these singles are from their upcoming sophomore album, Melt. Out October 25, Melt is shaping up to be an exciting piece of “desert disco,” as mentioned by the press. This theme has played out in dynamic visuals and musical elements heard in the previous singles, as well as in their newest single “Hardcore Romance.”
On “Hardcore Romance,” Beach Weather indulge in the romance found in toxic relationships. The track has hard and soft contrasts, as the verses are kind of hazy and mellow while the choruses are thrashy and aggressive. All the while, we hear lines like, “I don’t wanna come back down to Earth / I don’t really feel like myself / Am I freaking you out? / I want that hardcore romance / Are we just toxic from the start?” You can check it out in the video below, which was directed by Alexa San Román.
Telling us more about “Hardcore Romance,” guitarist Sean Silverman explains,
“[The song explores what] modern romance would look like to us, now at the point we’re at in our lives. ‘Hardcore Romance’ was the first demo that Nick and I got to make in person. Right away, it felt like we had tapped into something we’d never fully done before, which was exciting but also came with a lot of self-doubt. It’s even there in the opening lyrics of the song, ‘I don’t wanna come back down to Earth, I don’t really feel like myself.’ I think whenever we get to that place where something feels challenging sonically/emotionally, it’s a good thing. The best we can do is try to not run away from that feeling, and confront it.”
You can listen to “Hardcore Romance” on platforms like Spotify, SoundCloud, and Apple Music.
