There is a musical exploration in Bay Ledges‘ new sound — it seems after some time on the road he stripped down to create a bright piece amongst the indie electro-pop scene. The new song “Fool” is featured on his sophomore album Rivers which is reflective of a transformative time of experiencing loss and inviting change. There is a lot of emotional depth within the song and it has themes of relatability that allow the listener to experience the song and not just listen to it.
The song opens with what seems to be almost a folk-inspired strum on the guitar but then enter the slow synths and the serenity in Hurd’s voice driving the song in a different direction. The coos in his voice allow an incongruity that complements the meaning of the song.
Allowing a song with a theme of wanting change to have that contrast with the use of the synth from the piano and his rich tonal quality is very introspective. It brings an overall serene experience to the listener. Lyrically the song invites a level of calmness that slightly contradicts the lyrics. The song states “Cause im grounded by you / Not in a good way / In a way that makes me a fool.” The song discusses topics surrounding a longing for change but not realizing that comfort at times breeds stagnancy, and that within that grieving things inevitably have to end.
