Maddie Regent tries to avoid confrontation on “Sleeptalking”

Date:

At the end of last year, Maddie Regent unleashed her sophomore EP, Girl of Your Dreams. It exposed the way that sour relationships can lead to tension, paranoia, or guilt, which may not always manifest on the outside. Meanwhile, the music showcased Maddie’s genre-bending style with tracks that contained layers of elements from, for instance, pop, electronic, and dance music. Altogether, the EP shattered the illusion of a perfect girl and helped secure Maddie as an artist to watch. She is now following up Girl of Your Dreams with the release of “Sleeptalking,” the first of many new singles to come from Maddie this year.

On “Sleeptalking,” Maddie teams up with her partner Cade Hoppe and Eighty Ninety’s Harper James for a dreamy slice of synth-pop. We dive into an oasis of sound containing guitar strums, ripples of synth, and lush beats that accompany Maddie as she describes her desire for change. With earnest pop vocals that tie everything together, she sings, “It’s impossible / To give up so easily / Why won’t you just pick the fight? / You’re the stranger in my bed tonight,” hoping that her situation sorts itself out without too much involvement on her end. You can check it out below.

About “Sleeptalking,” Maddie shares,

“‘Sleeptalking’ is about wanting to be happy about something you should be happy about, but you aren’t. And the longer you avoid confrontation, the more you wish for things to go south so your unhappiness feels justified. It’s classic self-sabotage and you know it.”

You can listen to “Sleeptalking” on platforms like Apple Music and Spotify.
