The official start of the Shawn era has begun with the release of debut singles “Why Why Why” and “Isn’t That Enough”. Shawn Mendes celebrated his birthday on August 8th and gifted his fans two new singles, which explain the journey that the Canadian singer took to find his love for music again. It is clear that Shawn has found his sound on this album.
“Isn’t That Enough” dives into a conversation about personal growth and the desire for validation. The song serves as a reminder that pain and happiness can coexist with one another: “My hands still shakin’ / My mind’s still racing’ / My heart’s still breaking’ in two / I’m still changin’ / My friends stay patient / My mother still calls for the news”.
“Why Why Why” is accompanied by a music video directed and shot by Connor Brashier and Anthony Wilson. The single shows off the singer’s vulnerable side as he opens up about his doubts and insecurities. The song seems to be referencing pivotal moments in his lifetime, including mental health issues that came with the cancellation of the Wonder World Tour, as well as previous relationship struggles: “I stepped off the stage with nothin’ left / All the lights were fuckin’ with my head / But here I am, singin’ songs again”.
