Country artist Dasha’s recent rise in the music industry has been nothing short of exhilarating. Emerging as a refreshing voice that resonates with authenticity and passion; her debut country album, What Happens Now? has positioned her as a formidable force in the industry, soaring to #2 on the Billboard Emerging Artists Chart and peaking at #117 on the Billboard 200. Born and raised in the picturesque San Luis Obispo, California, the 24-year-old singer-songwriter made her Lollapalooza debut on the Tito’s stage this past weekend; where we spoke with her about her creative process, who she’s been listening to, and what comes next.
When asked about her creative process, Dasha revealed that inspiration was her starting point, and it varies each time. “It kind of depends,” she explained. “I always start with whatever inspires me – whether that is a title, or lyric, or melody, or guitar riff.” For instance, the catchy hook of “Austin” came from a spontaneous freestyle moment: “Did your boots stop workin’? Did your truck break down?” In contrast, “Didn’t I” was born from a banjo riff that sparked the entire track. “We kind of freestyled the melody and came up with it super-fast,” she added.
Her approach to songwriting is as dynamic as her music itself. “I like freestyling on the mic and just kind of playing around with stuff,” Dasha noted. This method, she believes, keeps the process enjoyable and authentic. “It has to be a fun process, or what are we doing this for, you know?”
Dasha’s recent album, What Happens Now?, was a testament to her commitment to artistic freedom. After parting ways with her label and management, and shifting back to her country roots, she found herself navigating a period of uncertainty. “I was in a very scary, tumultuous place in my life where I didn’t know what the fuck I was doing,” she admitted. Yet, this upheaval led to a profound personal revelation. “It was the first time that I didn’t listen to anybody else’s opinions on songs, production, anything. I really just listened to what I wanted, and trusted my gut.”
The result was a deeply personal album. “The magic of that album – it was all me,” Dasha reflected. “I didn’t do well when there were a lot of opinions; I think I lost myself a lot.” This newfound clarity allowed her to fully embrace her artistic vision and deliver an album that felt true to herself. Her Lollapalooza performance demonstrated the tangible impact of this creative liberation. Playing to a lively crowd, Dasha described the experience as “electric,” and that she is “doing some rock star shit!”
“It felt the most relaxed in a way. I wasn’t freaking out about knowing what song was coming next, or lyrics, or chords,” she said. “The crowd was so receptive to that, and I just felt so seen as an artist, and celebrated.” Her interaction with the audience, including a memorable moment when she joined them in the crowd, showcased her willingness to break conventions, even within the country genre.
When it comes to her musical influences, Dasha highlighted a diverse range of artists. “Kacey Musgraves is an always – Golden Hour is my favorite album of all time, so that’s always on repeat,” she said. “Mac Miller, “Circles,” Swimming – that whole album is crazy! I love Frank Ocean, and Megan Maroney’s recent work.” Avery Anna’s new album, Break Up Over Breakfast, also stood out as a recommendation for fans of emerging country artists.
Additionally, Dasha praised Josiah and the Bonnevilles, saying, “He played after me, and I went out and sang a song with him. He is such an angel, he’s so amazing. I love his songs.”
Looking ahead, Dasha had lots of upcoming plans. “Tour coming up in the fall,” she confirmed, with a European leg kicking off soon. Fans can also anticipate a deluxe version of What Happens Now?, featuring additional tracks. While the exact release date remained under wraps, Dasha’s excitement was evident.
Dasha’s approach to music, marked by spontaneity and a rejection of conventional constraints, continues to captivate and inspire. Her journey reflects a broader trend of artists forging new paths, embracing authenticity, and defying genre boundaries.
