Legendary Australian rock band Wolfmother graced Prague with their presence this past Wednesday night, July 24, at Lucerna Music Bar, joined by the Czech rock-electronica crossover duo Goofy Cow.
Goofy Cow, living up to their names as they sauntered onstage wearing matching cow-print shirts, did a great job of warming up the crowd. Composed of vocalist and guitarist Jakub Pavlík and drummer Venca Alan Čikl, the band had an undeniable charisma. With a set of original songs of different styles sprinkled with well-executed mashups of covers of Eminem and other artists, they treated fans to a dynamic show. They truly brought the energy throughout the entire performance, with Pavlík jumping off the stage and into the crowd with his guitar as he played the last riff of their final song.
The venue was absolutely filled to the brim, including both balconies, by the time Wolfmother took the stage, with the band even coming out a few minutes early. Vocalist and guitarist Andrew Stockdale, clad in leopard print and a denim vest, greeted the crowd warmly before the band broke out into their hit “Dimension” from their debut album to open the show. They then skipped a decade or so and moved straight into “Rock Out”, a single from their most recently released album of the same name. The graphics on the stage behind them featured the Rock Out cover art, so this seemed mighty appropriate.
Stockdale’s wildly impressive guitar playing easily won the crowd over and the band transitioned smoothly from song to song, with the first half of their setlist being dominated by hits from their self-titled debut album like “Woman” and “White Unicorn” with a few newer tracks sprinkled in between. Stockdale paused between songs to introduce the bassist and the drummer and interact a little more with the eager fans.
This didn’t stop them from jumping back into the music almost right away, though. The crowd went crazy for “Vagabond” and “Victorious” as the anticipation for the rest of the show set in. Stockdale waved to the crowd and entertained them with his animated facial expressions as he played, receiving the love right back.
The band broke into “Joker & The Thief”, clearly what fans had been waiting for all night as people started jumping even higher and pulling out their phones, ready to capture this iconic moment. This epic finale gave way to the three band members joining at the front of the stage to wave and bid fans goodbye before almost immediately returning to their instruments for their two encores, the last of which was a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Rock and Roll”.
The energy at this show was palpable from start to finish. Fans were densely packed from the bar to the stage and on the balconies above, but no one seemed to mind as they were all jamming out to the music. Stockdale’s signature voluminous curls combined with the leopard print and concentration of the most complicated riffs gave the show an unmistakable rock vibe, while the smiles and gestures exchanged with the audience warmed up the atmosphere and added a sense of camaraderie. There was no song on the 1.5-hour setlist that wasn’t a hit, and fans left smiling from ear to ear after having been in the presence of such talented legends.
Wolfmother has a few more tour dates coming up throughout Europe, including some festival appearances, so don’t miss your chance to see them. Tickets can be found here.
