Lara Taubman, an indie Americana singer-songwriter, has just released her transformative new album, The Gospel of Getting Free, on June 21st. This latest work showcases her signature style infused with a fresh, renewed perspective. The album captures Taubman’s journey of personal growth and healing, reflecting a newfound sense of positivity and emotional freedom.
Taubman describes her new album as a vessel that has finally brought her home. “The Gospel of Getting Free” signifies a departure from her previous work, which she views as guiding steps out of her complex trauma towards becoming her true self. This album, she asserts, is a testament to her mental and emotional evolution, brought about by her recent engagement with somatic therapy.
A dedicated New Yorker, Taubman began her artistic career as a visual artist and critic. Her time in Montana’s wilderness inspired a shift towards music, drawing on influences like Leonard Cohen, Patti Smith, and David Byrne, as well as her bluegrass-infused childhood in Virginia’s coal country. This blend of inspirations led her to develop a unique style of Americana and gospel-inspired folk.
In 2015, Taubman began writing music, culminating in the release of her debut album, “Revelation,” in 2020. Her distinctive voice, reminiscent of Patti Smith and Joni Mitchell, paired with her compelling storytelling, quickly garnered a dedicated audience. With the support of producer Steven Williams, Taubman released two more albums and several singles between 2022 and 2023, each showcasing her artistic growth and thematic exploration.
Her previous albums, from the soulful “Revelation” to the bluesy “Blind Spot” and the indie gospel “Ol’ Kentucky Road,” have consistently explored themes of yearning and emotional liberation. “Ol’ Kentucky Road,” in particular, features poignant songs like “Come to Me,” where Taubman’s powerful vocals evoke a deep sense of longing and resilience.
In “The Gospel of Getting Free,” Taubman continues to explore these themes but with a renewed sense of hope and humor. Tracks like “The Reason I Was Born” and “Sing Your Song” reflect her emotional transformation and newfound optimism. Even songs that tackle darker subjects, such as addiction in “Sugar” and heartbreak in “The Odyssey,” carry an underlying message of hope and resilience.
Lara Taubman currently resides in New York City, where she continues to create and perform. Describing herself as a “troubadour of the new world,” Taubman believes in the power of song and storytelling to provide solace and refuge in a rapidly changing world. Before her music career, she was a visual art critic, curator, and painter, but it was her commitment to songwriting that truly transformed her life.
Taubman’s music is deeply rooted in her childhood experiences in Virginia’s coal country, where old-time and bluegrass music were integral parts of her upbringing. This influence is evident in her long, narrative-driven ballads, which evoke the ancient melodies of Britain and Appalachia. Her hope is that her music provides others with the same sense of connection and solace that she found in her early musical experiences.
In addition to her music career, Taubman has ventured into the world of design with her vintage garment rental company, Lara Sings Vintage. This collection of carefully curated clothing, amassed over 40 years, reflects her passion for beautiful design. Many of her clients are fellow musicians, and she enjoys incorporating her love of fashion into her performances.
Lara Taubman lives in Manhattan with her dog and cat, surrounded by her beloved collection of hats. Her journey from visual artist to singer-songwriter has been marked by a profound dedication to her craft and a deep belief in the power of music to heal and connect.
