After the success of their song, “Heat Waves”, Glass Animals knew they had big shoes to fill with their latest album, I Love You So F***ing Much. However, this album shines with its catchy lyrics and captivating storytelling. I Love You So F***ing Much explores the reality of love that is hidden from the public eye.

Opening with “Show Pony”, we are given the theme of the album. Through steady percussion and flexible vocals, this track dismisses the idea of a fairy-tale romance and highlights the pain some may experience in relationships. This motif is repeated in songs such as “Creatures in Heaven” which shares the aftermath of taking love for granted and “Wonderful Nothing” which focuses on the danger of destructive relationships. While these scenarios can be caused by both outside and inside forces, the second half of the album shifts to investigate more of the mental toll complex relationships can take on an individual.

“A Tear in Space (Airlock)” starts this change where punchy percussion and choppy synth warn about losing who you are in all-consuming relationships. In songs such as “I Can’t Make You Fall in Love Again” and “White Roses”, listeners are reminded that the only person you can control is yourself, so certain people or relationships might not be a good fit. However, this should be no reason to run from the unknown. In “On the Run”, listeners are shown that no matter how much you can separate yourself from an issue, it will never get resolved until you face it head-on. Through layered harmonies and leading percussion, Glass Animals gains the confidence to acknowledge their problems, work towards resolving them, and find inner peace.

Although most of I Love You So F***ing Much highlights uncertainty or obstacles in relationships, it ends on a higher note with “Lost in the Ocean”. Through light vocals and steady percussion, Glass Animals shares with listeners that life may throw curveballs, but you don’t need to face them alone. Lyrics such as “How are you so loved and so lonesome? / You get lost in the ocean / But you know I’d do anything for you, babe / And now I’m here and I’m hoping / For Sun in the afternoon” show that life may get hectic, but there will always be someone standing by your side, helping you face the darkness. I Love You So F***ing Much is a message that there are always better days ahead, even if we can’t see them now.
