Mae Stephens announces debut EP ‘Securely Insecure’ out Aug. 2, releases “Small Town Syndrome”

Date:

Northamptonshire-based singer-songwriter Mae Stephens has announced that her debut EP, Securely Insecure, is set to release on Friday, Aug. 2, just over two weeks from now.

The lead single, “Small Town Syndrome,” sees Stephens dreaming of an escape from this mess, where she explores her own experiences stuck in a small town where everyone knows everyone. She sings, “This small town syndrome’s getting me down / I can hear them talking, talking so loud / And I’m still trying to find a way out of here.” Stephens finds herself trapped amidst small-town gossip and the pressures to conform, yearning for a chance to break free and find her own way in a world beyond her stifling surroundings.

About the song, Stephens discussed her inspiration behind the song and what the small town syndrome means to her:

“It’s about being in a small town and everyone knowing everyone’s business,” Mae explains. “The lyrics tell you how I was hiding behind walls, putting on a brave face while feeling the weight of gossip and judgment. The chorus reflects the struggle to find a way out of this, resonating with anyone who’s ever felt stuck and misunderstood in a close-knit community. The song’s main theme is really of those dreaming of escape and new beginnings.”

Securely Insecure is an ode to Stephen’s younger self who experienced bullying in high school; she explores themes including identity and trauma.

Securely Insecure Tracklist:
1. Small Town Syndrome
2. You Don’t Remember Me
