Through feather-light vocals and a signature retro pop musicality that is as charming as it is enticing, indie singer-songwriter Clairo has defined herself as one of the most prolific stars in modern independent music. Through her unique blend of soft rock, pop, lo-fi and soul, the American indie songstress has established an artistry that has hooked millions of listeners — over 17 million monthly listeners on Spotify, to be exact.
Clairo made her way into the music scene with her inaugural 2017 single “2 Hold U”, but the Atlanta, GA-born artist was writing and recording her own music since she was 13. She soon grew a devout following on YouTube, and in 2017 went viral with her single “Pretty Girl”. This online fame eventually earned her a record deal with Fader Label, with whom she released her two full-length studio albums Immunity (2019) and Sling (2021). Clairo has since gone on to earn praise from Pitchfork, Rolling Stone and the New York Times while she’s made her mark on the Billboard charts. Now, her third full-length record, Charm, is set to release this Friday, July 12.
Clairo (born Claire Cottrill) has release two singles ahead of Charm. The first single, “Sexy to Someone,” is an honest and relatable track as the singer confesses her desire to be desired. As she sings in the chorus, “Sexy to somebody, it would help me out. Oh, I need a reason to get out of the house,” Clairo delivers a cheeky and down-to-earth vulnerability over a 70s soul-inspired composition. Her most recent single “Nomad” takes on a more melancholy tone to her vulnerability as well as a more mellow musicality. Seeming to express a story of a lost love, the indie pop icon confesses to listeners — and perhaps herself — that she’d “rather be alone than be a stranger…rather wake up alone than be reminded of how it was a dream this time.” It is this kind of magnetic lyricality that is balanced by a soft musical style that has amassed Clairo such a large fanbase that only continues to grow. There is no doubt that she will continue to express this personable musicianship in greater detail on her upcoming album.
