Indie folk artist David Kushner released his newest single, “Humankind”, on June 21. Kushner’s talent for blending pop and folk has made him a rising star in the music industry since releasing hit tracks “Burn”, “Miserable Man”, and “Mr. Forgettable” almost two years ago in his album Footprints I Found. His 2023 hit track “Daylight” recently surpassed one billion streams on Spotify. To thank his fans, Kushner released a video featuring an acoustic rendition of the song on his social media platforms.

In “Humankind”, Kushner explores the human struggle between light and darkness. His profound lyrics are a standout feature of the song, as he creates powerful images in the listener’s imagination. He sings, “When I look for kindness now / Humankind just lets me down” and “I was looking for living water / You just let me drown”.
Along with the song’s release, Kushner put out an official music video. In the video, Kushner visually portrays how people can bring each other down through dark images such as drowning and masking one’s own identity. Since premiering, the video has over 300,000 views. It can be accessed on Kushner’s YouTube page.
About “Humankind”, Kushner said:
“This project has been a long time coming and I’m excited I finally get to share it with all of you. I wanted to depict humankind’s struggle between light and darkness. It’s something that all of us feel in our own way, and certainly something I feel daily. I want people to understand that there are always two sides to everything, with two forces at play. Recognizing this reality is the first step towards finding true purpose in the struggle.”
Kushner draws influence from indie folk and classic folk artists including Hozier, The Lumineers, and Bon Iver. With his music, he aims to create a space for healing as well as self-expression.
