Indie pop artist nellie just released her first single since 2022, titled “Garden”. On Spotify, the song is posted for streaming along with a message from nellie that reads “i’ve returned”. The piece has already brought in incredible success for nellie, earning a spot on NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest Top Shelf of 2024.
About the new track, nellie said:
“‘Garden’ was written a few years back, while I was living on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Living in New York, we are forced to play a role in our neighbors lives- whether that’s due to being the loud neighbor, the person who gets coffee at the same time you do, by peeking at the dozens of windows across from yours. I initially wanted to write it about all of these people in my life. And then I realized that they are doing the same with me- looking at my life through the windows and hearing through the walls. I wondered how much they’ve learned about me.”
The song takes the listener straight to the neighborhood nellie sings about, with sweet guitar chords and soft beats. Her voice sings, “I wonder if you see me / I wonder if you see me trying”, adding a raw sense of how easy it is to feel small in a world that moves so quickly. The song ends sweetly, as nellie sings “And for / A moment / I can see you smile”, highlighting the small moments that motivate us to continue in life.
