We all process grief differently. Some of us mourn privately, others like to be around people. Some might not cry for months, others might not ever be able to stop. When St. South lost her father in 2020, she was ready to channel grief into art. While she wanted to spend the next year writing and working at the piano, the grief built into a depression that made it nearly impossible to create new music. But in time, St. South was able to craft a collection of songs that touched on what she was experiencing – the loss, the grief, the healing… These songs will now be shared with the world on September 20 in the form of BIG SADS. This EP will feature previous singles like “Better Days,” “Didn’t Need You,” and the title track, which St. South shares today.
A special amalgamation of dance beats and soothing melodies, “BIG SADS” feels both nostalgic and innovative. St. South’s proclivity at crafting music that can be emotionally therapeutic comes through, encouraging listeners to take a beat and take in all that the song offers. We hear St. South open up about the “big sads” that have been felt lately, and the things she can do to appease those feelings. She describes the notion of seeing a therapist, visiting the beach, or riding a bike, but just resting and closing her eyes seems the most tempting. You can check it out in the video below.
About “BIG SADS,” St. South explains,
“The last three years were full of some very big sads, and this is the song I wish I’d heard in the early months of grieving my dad. It’s a song about me, for me, and the things I struggle with when grieving. It’s about longing for a normal childhood summer, stretched out in the backseat of the car, dozing after a hot and heavy beach day, my parents in the front telling me to rest my eyes. Writing this song felt like telling myself that it’s okay and that I can have those things again. It’s about surrendering to sadness and resting when you need to… And it’s about my dad; ‘I remember everything that you ever said to me.’”
“BIG SADS” comes from St. South’s upcoming EP of the same name, out September 20. The project will contain five tracks that delve into emotions like “love, grief, depression, anxiety, heartache, and heart-healing,” as St. South was processing the death of her father during its creation. She shares,
“That’s why the EP is so special to me, because of how impossible it felt to start, let alone finish. When I hear it now, mixed and mastered, I can’t believe that it’s done. I can’t believe that I did that, amidst the biggest sads of my life.”
You can listen to “BIG SADS” on platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and SoundCloud.
