It would be nice if the universe could tell us how to act or what to say at any given moment. When should we step up? When do we interfere? Would now be a good time to open up? When there’s so much going on, it can be tough to take a beat and figure out your next move. You may need to go somewhere quiet, somewhere that can help you realize what you need to do to live your truth. On SERGIO’s mixtape, WHERE THE SILENCE IS LOUD, the Pop-Latino artist goes to a place that is too quiet to ignore, encouraging him to do some reflecting. Over the course of the project’s six songs, SERGIO elaborates on themes like love, faith, and strength. In the end, these songs can inspire fans to turn inward as well, find their own truth, and act accordingly.

We begin with “Silence,” a fluffy oasis of a track that establishes the vibe of the mixtape. We drift away with SERGIO as he sings, “City’s been getting loud / Hella people talking” and “I’ve been trying to find a place where it’s safe to go away / ‘Cause I don’t want to hear another sound,” the accompanying guitar pulling us further into the quiet with him. We then switch things up with “Juliet.” Between the steady rhythms and beats, SERGIO delivers alluring Spanish lyrics, adding more drama and intrigue to the story. When he sings in English, we hear lines like, “Couldn’t be more honest with you / Looking in your eyes, I knew / You would have me in your room / Doing things I never do / I’m a fool for you,” putting us in the mood for a flirty and romantic time.

Of course, it’s all fun and games until the romance turns sour. On “Hollywood Freestyle,” SERGIO tries to keep his distance. There is an R&B flow to the track, the meandering electric guitar and snap-like downbeats giving way to SERGIO’s honeyed vocals. As he fluently dips in and out of English and Spanish lyrics, listeners can hear the desperation in his voice. He sings, “I’ll give you the space you need right now / Truthfully, just had to get this off my chest” and “I’m just missing you and don’t know what to do,” wanting things to work out. It seems as though things are going smoothly enough on “Take 5,” however, which follows. On this fresh yet laid-back track, we hear about the importance of making time for those you love. Throughout the song, SERGIO tells us, “Life’s slipping through my hands,” and explains that he is “Spending too much time tied up on my own.” He soon realizes why he should put that work life on pause, though, as heard in the lines, “Cada dia sacrificó un poquito más / Won’t let it happen contigo / ‘Cause you bring me back / Your love’s the release / I forget that I need.”

Whether he is dealing with work or relationships, SERGIO has what he needs to stay grounded. On the piano-driven ballad “Always,” he opens up about his faith and spirituality. While the topic seems heavy, SERGIO keeps things light with his elegant vocals and tender lyrics. He sings, “But you’re always holding me / ‘Cause you’re always all I need / Sigo firme y de pie / Solo por una razón / Al centro llevó la fe / Que me ha dado fuerza en cada situación,” aware that his faith will always be there for him, giving him strength. SERGIO then dotes on his family on “Proud,” which closes the mixtape. It is a very humble track, the warm beats, heartfelt melodies, and innocent lyrics creating a safe space. Over it all, SERGIO sings, “If I made the money / Maybe moms would settle down / I’d prove everybody wrong that ever had a doubt” and “El tiempo, va lento / Pero tengo aquí / De cerca, el sueño / Ain’t that far from me,” motivated to chase after his dreams. He claims, “I just wanna make ‘em proud,” ready to give back.

With WHERE THE SILENCE IS LOUD, SERGIO presents us with vulnerable and intimate moments. From describing the influence of love to the power of faith and family, SERGIO reflects on who he is and where he is going. He shared, “I hope this mixtape resonates with listeners and inspires them to embrace their own truth,” which is an important way to go through life. But aside from all of the empowering messages that are found within the songs, there is plenty of vibrant music to be enjoyed. SERGIO’s creative blend of Pop and Latin rhythms, R&B melodies and beats, and English and Spanish lyrics makes the mixtape a real gem, speaking to audiences who share a diverse taste in music. The next time the noise gets quiet or when the silence gets loud, just come back to this mixtape to reconnect with yourself – and to also enjoy its compelling sounds.
