Maya Hawke is a natural storyteller. While Hawke has spent significant time acting and modeling, she has made her mark on the music industry, releasing various records inspired by her love of folk music. Her latest release, Chaos Angel, showcases Hawke’s vulnerability through her emotional lyrics and sweet acoustic melodies.

Opening with “Black Ice”, Hawke’s soft instrumentation and tender vocals carry a narrative about wanting authentic love without worrying about dishonesty. Lyrics such as, “Can you keep a secret without telling a lie? / Can you go to bed without saying goodnight?” show her hesitancy towards jumping into a relationship. Through songs such as “Dark” and “Hang In There”, Hawke reflects on tough feelings and bad experiences from past partners. However, as Hawke sings in “Hang In There”, she shares, “What happened to you is not who you are”, giving hope for a better and brighter future.

Songs such as “Missing Out” mark a shift where Hawke weighs the pros and cons of beginning a new relationship through light vocals and layered harmonies. “Wrong Again” and “Okay” acknowledge past mistakes in relationships, but express a newfound willingness to try again. During the last track, “Chaos Angel”, Hawke reveals that she finally wants to love someone again over gentle piano and powerful strings.

Chaos Angel shares a journey about personal growth. Uncertainty from the beginning of the album is resolved by recognizing complicated situations and the feelings that arise from them. By the end of the album, Hawke comes face to face with the human need to be loved and is willing to open herself up again in hopes of finding happiness.
