Want to have a sleepover with the girls? Indie pop artists Jeremy Zucker, Lauv and Alexander 23 are known separately for their heartbreakingly intimate lyrics and sound. They just dropped their first collaborative track, “Cozy,” today via Mercury Records.
“Cozy” follows Zucker’s latest single “this time,” released on Sept. 29, to mark the five-year anniversary of his EP summer, which included the hit single “comethru”. In addition, Zucker released his EP is nothing sacred? in 2023.
In the first verse, Zucker shares how he feels safe enough to let his guard down around the person he cares for. “So I dropped my guard, and it hit real hard / Couldn’t even make a sound / Felt the whole world slowing down.”
The song is both intimate and comforting and explores what you feel when you connect deeply with someone special. It exudes warmth and vulnerability, perfectly combining the unique styles of all three artists.
The physical and emotional intimacy described in the track makes the girls feel known and understood when they join in on the chorus. “But when you kiss me, it’s so cozy / And I don’t know what it is, it’s like you know me.” However, the second verse introduces a sense of uncertainty, acknowledging the potential for pain and the unpredictability of the future. “There’s a universe where we both get hurt / But, in this reality / We’ll just have to wait and see,” sings Lauv, who just released his sexual and self-assured high-energy single “Potential” via AWAL on April 24, delving into sexual expression.
Accompanying the track is a music video where Lauv and Alexander 23 come over to Zucker’s house to have a sleepover together. Directed by Paris Mumpower and inspired by the comedy film Step Brothers, the video feels personal like you’re in on the night with them.
Regardless, they don’t want to end the perfect moment — with stuffed animals, a good movie and singing into hair brushes — as they sing, “And there’s a thousand reasons why / We should stop and say, ‘Goodnight’ / But I don’t care ’cause you’re so damn cozy.”
Zucker commented on working with Lauv and Alexander 23:
“This collab has been a long time
coming, and it was the most fun i’ve had in a while making music. Knowing Ari and Alexander
for so many years and having such similar fan bases made this rollout all the more exciting to
us. We each had the ability to bring a bit of ourselves into this song and video and created
something really special.”
The video concludes with Lauv and Alexander 23 falling asleep in two bunk beds, while Zucker tucks them in. Overall, the highly-anticipated collaboration between Jeremy Zucker, Lauv and Alexander 23 titled “Cozy” feels warm, comfy and intimately cozy.
Zucker and Alexander 23 previously collaborated on the latter’s track, “Nothing’s the Same,” which was featured on his 2021 EP, Oh No, Not Again. Alexander 23 made his debut in 2019 with “Dirty AF1s” and released his Recording Industry Association of America Platinum Certified Track “IDK You Yet.”
