New Zealand singer-songwriter MADELINE. is unafraid to step into the spotlight. Having studied at the Auckland University Jazz School and founding the all-girl band She Loves You, MADELINE. has familiarized herself with the local music scene and is eager to embark on her solo endeavors. Inspired by artists such as Amy Winehouse, Lady Gaga, and the Arctic Monkeys, MADELINE. combines her smooth vocals, trap beats, thoughtful lyrics, and thumping bass lines to create her unique sound.
In her recent release, “still that girl”, MADELINE. reflects on a past relationship and asks her partner if she is still important to them. Through tantalizing, upbeat drum rhythms, MADELINE. goes through memories of spending time with her partner, singing “Loved how I was with you”. While the relationship weakened over time, they will still have a bond, seen in the lyrics: “As the years went by / I knew I’d always find you”. While there may not be a romantic future together, MADELINE. is comfortable asking if she is “still that girl” to her ex-partner.
Sharing about “still that girl,” MADELINE. explains:
“I wrote this song to sum up dancing on the line b/w expectation & reality in a long distance relationship. Listen to it post-breakup; driving on a HWY, sun out windows down. Grateful it happened but happy to be free. The lyric ‘am I still that girl to you?’ highlights my battle of mourning the relationship, the self-growth from it & hoping this person won’t forget me/that version of me. <3”
