deegie Mourns the One Who Got Away On “Old Spice (Eric #1)”

Date:

After releasing music with her husband under the name Only Bricks for five years, pop punk artist deegie is back creating bold and fierce songs for her upcoming EP, EXES. The inspiration behind this EP came from rummaging through her online journals which delved into the relationships she experienced over the course of a decade. EXES focuses on the exploration of memory, accountability, and wisdom gained over time. Each single is named after one of her exes, and her latest single “Old Spice (Eric #1)” is dedicated to her high school ex-boyfriend, Eric, with whom she shares a complicated history.

“Old Spice (Eric #1)” is an electric breakup song featuring a commanding guitar and powerful vocals. The song begins and ends by featuring stringed instrumentation, representing the time deegie and Eric spent in high school band together. This attention to detail is carried through in her lyrics, where deegie reminisces on their high school memories together, such as going to band camp, their junior prom, and ultimately their split which broke her heart. At the end of the song, deegie sings “How could I die for you if you’re dead to me”, showing that she has come to terms with their separation and is ready to move on.

Sharing more about “Old Spice (Eric #1)”, deegie comments:

“After running into Eric years after we dated, when we were both living in New York City, and getting rejected by him again, he’s truly cemented himself as the one who got away… But it’s the idea of what he represented to me as an adolescent – a Prince Charming who could make me complete as a person and fulfill all my needs – that I had to get over by writing this breakup song.”
