After releasing A Brief Epic last year, Caroline Romano has continued to push her own boundaries as an artist while creating a charming and all-too relatable world about love and heartbreak. She followed up the EP with singles like “girl in a china shop,” “Tell Her I Said Hi,” and “Used By You,” which ushered in a bolder era for her. From the unapologetic alt-rock sounds to the personal, stream of consciousness lyrics, these songs show that Caroline is a compelling force in the singer-songwriter world who still has so much to offer. Her newest single, “Doesn’t Matter,” is yet another captivating release, flaunting the mesmerizing and unexplainable forces of relationships.
With “Doesn’t Matter,” Caroline goes from assessing the damage of past relationships, as we have heard on her previous singles, to taking on the possibility of more in a new one. This time, she is open to heartbreak and will recklessly follow where this relationship is going, even if she knows better. Caroline’s vocals are very calm and collected as she sings, “It doesn’t matter where you go on the weekends / If I’m going with you, love me deeper than we’re sinking,” choosing to listen to her heart over her head. Along with this different point of view, we also have a sound that is more stripped back, as steady drums and synth take the place of thrashing indie pop and angsty, pent-up vocals.
About “Doesn’t Matter,” Caroline shares,
“‘Doesn’t Matter’ is sort of a ‘choose your own storyline’ song. I wrote it about a relationship that felt like a double-edged sword; a relationship that had me thinking that maybe the inevitable heartbreak would be worth it. It’s a song about falling, all too carelessly, for someone on a rainy evening with the car radio playing. It’s simple and convoluted and all too accurate, at least from my personal experience.”
You can listen to “Doesn’t Matter” on platforms like Spotify and Apple Music.
Caroline is currently on tour with Smallpools and Grayscale as they finish up their ‘The Night Shift Tour’ across the US. There are only a few days left before the tour wraps up on May 8 in Austin, Texas. You can grab tickets here.
