Lady Charles Releases New Single “Bedroom Pop” in a Dreamy Revival of the DIY Music Scene

Date:

Lady Charles brand new single “Bedroom Pop” emerges as a look back to the era when artists traded studio perfection for the raw authenticity of DIY recording.

Structured as a compelling conversation between collaborators, the song skilfully intertwines musical and thematic elements, addressing the challenges that artists often face in the industry. Set against the backdrop of the DIY ethos of the early 2010’s indie scene, the song delves into themes of exploitation and the pursuit of self-respect.

“I have seen a lot of predatory behaviour aimed at young, talented artists, and I wanted to affirm that if you’re finding yourself disrespected or worse you do not owe anything to these types. I have always felt very protective of my artistic friends’ output, and there is little more disheartening than seeing someone’s energy sucked away by the promise of success with a hidden cost.

The song isn’t inspired by a particular experience, and that’s partially just because of how unfortunately widespread this is. I have helped bands re-record their demos after producers began to demand dates in return for what was supposed to be free help, I have been kicked out of a band only to find out that a remaining member isolated and verbally abused the other once it was just the two of them. I have seen incredibly talented people absolutely burned out by the ludicrous parasatism of these types.”

At its core though, the song is as much a warning as a celebration. “I wanted it to be clear the love I have for DIY artists. The core message of the song isn’t one that centres the dark stuff, the abuse, but rather emphasizes the power of music and the support that often exists among friends who play music.”

Lady Charles deserves praise for using music to shine a light on predatory behaviour within the music industry, and extend support to fellow artist who may be grappling with similar issues.

A departure from the usual writing style is marked by the incorporation of jazz-influenced chord progressions and the inclusion of saxophone and guitar solos. These stylistic choices not only contribute to the dreamy atmosphere but also serve to underscore its themes. There is an airy and expansive sound that mirrors the dreamy essence of the genre. And with a departure from lo-fi conventions, the song effortlessly conjures up a hazy, ethereal atmosphere synonymous with bedroom pop.

Actress Zoe Towne’s vocals enrich the song, with soaring harmonies and emotional depth that really embody the mood and meaning.

“I love featuring others’ voices on my records – voices are instruments and everyone’s voice and how they use it is different. I have never understood the idea that as a solo artist you are presumed to take the singer role all the time when there’s so much variety and power in having others sing key parts”

“Bedroom Pop” then is a departure from the previous guitar style in “Manic Pixie Dream World”, opting instead for a clean, reverberant melody reminiscent of dream pop’s signature sound. This deliberate stylistic nod enhances the song’s overall ambiance.

Charles’ own personal journey from enduring bullying in their youth to finding solace and inspiration in music, adds a layer of authenticity. It is clear that their experiences have profoundly shaped their artistic vision and their commitment to creating music that is both genuine and impactful.

It’s a poignant and timely release that displays Lady Charles’ growth as an artist and their dedication to addressing important social issues through music.
