Bethany Gray puts poetry to music in “Wink”

Date:

Bethany Gray

Bethany Gray is an emerging folk musician. She began putting out her solo music recently in 2023 with her debut single, “Clock Tower.” She’s also a part of a side project featuring herself and her dear friend Madeline Privott. These two make music under the name Swirlhood, and released their debut single “Chip Clip” back in 2022. Gray’s music highlights beautiful acoustic guitar melodies and her poetic lyricism.

“Wink” is Gray’s latest single. Her lyrics are incredibly raw and personal. The song is anecdotal, reminiscent of writers such as Adrienne Lenker and Joni Mitchell. The production is kept light, yet brings just enough to make Gray’s words feel almost haunting. The last 30 seconds of the song introduce a different melody, and the song ends with the lyrics, “Your eyes are closed,”- which beautifully concludes the song considering the opening lyrics are “I’ve been out on one track, tunnel vision having, rhymes with wink,” The themes in this song allude to blurred lines surrounding having feelings for someone. Bethany’s picturesque use of words to keep a storyline flowing is what truly sells this song.
