If you had a friend who was dating someone not up to par, would you say anything? Would you have the guts to be real and speak your mind? Of course, Leah Mason would, as she is known for being honest and relatable, especially in her songwriting. Fans were drawn to these qualities, which came through last year on her debut EP, Honeydew & Hennessy. The country pop EP garnered millions of streams, but for her next project, Leah is steering away from country and into more of the pop realm. Her vulnerability and sincerity will still be present, though, which we hear on her first pop-centered single, “YOUR BOYFRIEND SUCKS.”
An edgy Galentine’s Day anthem, “YOUR BOYFRIEND SUCKS” celebrates the strength of female friendships. Leah plays the role of the “friend who is mad for you,” giving us direct lines like, “I’m just being honest, yeah your boyfriend sucks / Defends himself because he only cheated once.” In the end, she has no regrets for being so frank and proudly encourages, “Don’t walk, girl run, ‘cause your boyfriend sucks!” You can check it out below.
Telling us more about the single, Leah explains,
“I have this stunning, gorgeous, smart, outgoing, funny as hell friend that had been seeing this guy for a few months, and it felt like every week, I heard her tell me the most awful stories about how he treated her. I was always so confused as to WHAT her infatuation with him was because he…sucked! She is THE best person and friend, and she deserves to be treated that way! The song is brutally honest, but I believe it’s for the better because that’s what a real friend does.”
