For singer-songwriter Bellah Mae, heartbreak is not something to endure alone. As she prepared for her upcoming EP, Never Waste A Heartbreak, Bellah enlisted the help of her fans in The Hot Ex Girlfriends Club to shape the tracks that would be included. The EP, due out June 7, will include songs that will help others “move past anything and grow even stronger from it,” hinting that heartbreak is not the end of the world. Bellah’s proclivity to create such intimate yet relatable songs has earned her the support of tastemakers like House of Solo and Wonderland, over 40 million streams across releases, and a spot supporting Caity Baser around the UK this spring. We will most likely hear “Compatible” on this run, the first track from Never Waste A Heartbreak and also the most vulnerable track Bellah Mae has ever released.
With “Compatible,” Bellah gives us a wistful piano ballad that focuses on a lack of desire in a relationship. Her engaging pop vocals blissfully wrap around each pensive piano line, creating a melancholy space. She describes a seemingly perfect situation, where the other person is everything she would want on paper, but in reality, the chemistry is not there. Longingly, she sings, “It ain’t that bad, it’s just not what I wanted / Don’t wanna live this life half-hearted / I want fireworks and flames,” and mentions, “That ain’t enough, that ain’t love / No, we’re just compatible” in the end. You can check it out below.
About “Compatible,” Bellah shares,
“‘Compatible’ encapsulates the feeling of not feeling chosen or wanted by the person you’re with and the worry they’re too comfortable. And although being comfortable can be good, you don’t want it at the sacrifice of feeling so loved and appreciated. As a songwriter and storyteller, I often take from multiple inspiration around me for writing a song, yet I still didn’t quite expect this one to resonate with so many people.”
You can listen to “Compatible” on platforms like SoundCloud, Spotify, and Apple Music.
