Time dances to the rhythm of love’s frailness at times. Two individuals fall in and out of love, hoping to capture and hold onto moments of their time together. Like magnets, two hearts navigate the unpredictability of love in indie-alternative singer Del Water Gap, also known as Samuel Holden Jaffe’s newest single. “Cigarettes & Wine” captures just that — the desire to shut the curtains to keep the world inside when love is all there is. The track comes just four months after Jaffe released his sophomore album I Miss You Already + I Haven’t Left Yet.
Featured on the track is Holly Humberstone, who became known for her self-exposing lyrics, especially after releasing her debut album, Paint By Bedroom Black. Humberstone adds her signature atmospheric and intimate musical style in “Cigarettes & Wine.” She beautifully captures the beauty of shared, intimate moments in a romantic relationship.
It’s the chorus of the track that becomes a mantra, or an invitation to co-exist in a magical love, “Let’s keep living on cigarettes and wine / Shut the curtains to keep the world inside / No, it don’t make a difference / Who cares what we’re missing? / Let’s keep living how we’re living.” This message carries throughout the song, with “let’s keep living how we’re living” concluding the track.
In “Cigarettes & Wine,” Jaffe once again proves himself to be the epitome of contemporary indie-alternative music. Yet, the song would not be complete without Humberstone’s ethereal vocals. Together, they craft a sonic masterpiece that shows us that love can leave an indelible mark, much like artists leaving brushstrokes on canvases.
