Mae Stephens celebrates her ‘normality’ on “ADHD”

Date:

Thanks to Mae Stephens, those who were feeling unlucky in love last year had a new breakup bop to dance and relate to. She released the viral “If We Ever Broke Up,” which was about all the things she would have said to her ex-boyfriend when they were still dating. Most people look back on old relationships and have those “I wish I could have said this” or “I wish I would have done that” moments, which is why so many listeners – nearly 1 billion – have connected with the song. It actually became the second most popular track on TikTok globally in 2023, gearing Mae up for an incredible 2024. Maybe her first single of this year, “ADHD,” will go on to receive top honors.

Deviating from matters of the heart, “ADHD” focuses on matters of the mind. Over distinct bass whomps and a lighthearted disco groove, Mae touches on her tendency to forget things, get hung up on the same things, and become overstimulated by what’s going on in her life. She then breaks down her ADHD and OCD in the breezy choruses, claiming, “Disorder is the wrong term, it’s just my normality.” You can check it out below.

Telling us more about “ADHD,” Mae explains,

“‘ADHD’ is a really important track for me. It’s about my process of going through understanding myself and how the word ‘disorder’ is the wrong term for it, as it’s my normality. To anyone with ADHD, you are seen, and you are loved.”

Giving us an overview of last year and her hopes for 2024, Mae shares,

“Where do I even start? 2023 gave me everything I ever wanted. I have so many people to thank, from the people who supported me from the beginning to the fans that streamed the song to my family, who have been the biggest support to me this last year. It has been one hell of a whirlwind, and definitely a year I won’t forget. 2023, you gave me hope that in dark times, you can push through and succeed to enjoy the simple things in life. But moving on, 2024 is the time and place for some new tunes and a new turn in my musical journey. Expect some weird and wonderful surprises and maybe some hidden gems at the end. 2024 is going to be an incredible year, but to send 2023 off with a bang: If we ever broke up…I’d be 100% sad. Thank you, 2023, you gave me my dream. Cheers!”

You can listen to “ADHD” on platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and SoundCloud.
