Kansas City hard rock band Belle & The Vertigo Waves just unleashed the explosive “What You Wanted“, the first single off their upcoming EP (Re)Aligned, due to come out in early 2024.
“What You Wanted” is an aggressive rock anthem that boldly confronts the feelings of jealousy, as the narrator dodges the attacks and promptly fires back. Initially written about high school drama, the lyrics translate well into adulthood, as the band elaborates: “At the core of it, it all came down to someone hating you for having something they didn’t have. Thinking the only possible way you could have obtained the success, friendships or happiness you have in your life, is by lying, cheating, stealing or getting some sort of special treatment”.
Originally released in 2017 as a soft indie track, “What You Wanted” takes on a more combative tone: the thunderous guitars and raw vocals bring out the anger and frustration behind the meaning of the song. Citing 90s rock, 80s alt pop and even thrash metal riffs as influences, Belle & The Vertigo Waves brings hard rock to the forefront, with a fresh and modern sound that does not rely on nostalgia. In a musical landscape that tends to favor, “What You Wanted” is a breath of fresh air that swiftly smacks you across the face, as every great rock and roll song does.
