In the 80s, English pop group Dead or Alive released the infectious “You Spin Me Round (Like a Record).” With its dramatic vocals, catchy choruses, lively melodies, and enlivening beats, the track became an instant fan favorite. When Dead or Alive’s estate heard Gusted’s remix, they granted him official rights to the song, and he ran with it. On Gusted’s version, he maintains that frantic, high-energy feel of the original while incorporating a hardgroove techno style. Smartly isolating vocals, adding splashes of synth, and keeping a tight four-on-the-floor rhythm, Gusted has reintroduced this track to future generations and done justice to the original. “The track was crafted during a period of creative stagnation when it seemed like nothing was clicking. My friend Justin Jay encouraged me to not overthink it, which helped me break through the writer’s block. I ultimately created a track I’d want to perform live.
The original Dead or Alive song was on my first little iPod. I remember listening to it countless times, as I had only a few songs downloaded. I made the remix without overthinking it, simply sending it around, and to my surprise, it resonated with people. It reaffirms that my best tracks emerge when I’m in a carefree, exploratory state of mind, not fixated on the final outcome.”
