Annie Dressner comes to terms with a striking loss on “18 Years”

Date:

It is downright humiliating when you realize that someone you truly care about does not have the same feelings for you. I mean, you spend your time trying to get close to this person only for that person to tell you what you do not want to hear. That this was not real. That what you felt was wrong. Whether it is a friend, family member, or loved one, it hurts all the same. Time does not change the pain either, whether you were fooled for eight months or “18 Years.”

With “18 Years,” Annie Dressner recounts the moment she found out that someone she loved did not reciprocate her feelings in the slightest. As much as the single displays a youthful and playful façade through its spirited melodies and straightforward vocals, it is actually very devastating. The lyrics are riddled with harsh truths and vulnerabilities, made all the more striking with backing vocals from English singer-songwriter Pollly Paulusma. We hear lines like, “It took me 18 years to try and get to know you / It took me 18 years to finally trust you / It took hardly any time at all to feel let down” and “Tonight, I saw what I needed to see / That I’m nothing to you / It changed everything for me,” getting right to the point. But after all of this, does Annie’s love still endure? You can find out below.

Giving us more details about “18 Years,” Annie shares,

“This song is about sadness and feeling completely let down. It’s that sinking feeling of realizing you didn’t mean what you thought you did to someone and coming to terms with that immediate loss in that moment. Heartbroken and still wishful yet self-protecting.”

You can listen to “18 Years” on platforms like Apple Music and Spotify.

In April and May, Annie will embark on a headline tour of the UK in support of her new album, which arrives in the spring. You can find a full list of dates and tickets here.
