Mark Vickness, the virtuoso behind Progressive Acoustic Guitar, introduces his latest instrumental endeavor in collaboration with the musical collective MVI (Mark Vickness Interconnected). The album, titled “In The Rain Shadow,” is a dynamic and conceptually rich musical journey that showcases intricate instrumentation and themes inspired by the natural world.
The genesis of “In The Rain Shadow” can be traced back to Vickness’s move to the high desert of California’s Owens Valley in late 2020. Living in the literal rain shadow—a meteorological term denoting an area on the sheltered side of a mountain range with reduced precipitation due to wind patterns—served as the catalyst for most of the album’s tracks. The compositions draw inspiration from daily encounters with geological and meteorological features, offering a musical reflection on the newfound wonder of residing in the rain shadow, described as a mix of humility, awe, peace, thrill, tranquility, and beauty.
Comprising seven accomplished musicians, the MVI collective elevates “In The Rain Shadow” into a vast and genre-defying landscape filled with awe-inspiring moments. The album transcends musical boundaries, appealing to enthusiasts of jazz, classical, progressive rock, and beyond. MVI embodies the concept of oneness, connecting all human beings, and this overarching vision permeates the music, creating a harmonious and mosaic-like blend.
Expressing his gratitude for the ensemble, Vickness emphasizes that MVI embodies his dream as a composer. Each musician within the collective is a virtuoso capable of navigating a broad spectrum of musical styles. The ensemble includes a classical trio (violin, cello, oboe), a jazz quartet, and percussion instruments from around the world. From funk to raga-style improvisation, interwoven counterpoint to rock power chords, fast Irish 12/8 romps to ambient textural tapestries—the musicians effortlessly explore an array of musical expressions.
Complementing the album release, a series of HD live videos provide an immersive experience, allowing audiences to fully engage with one of progressive music’s most promising projects.
