Up-and-coming Czech pop punk band Bitter Season has just released their upbeat new single “What We Had (Is Over)” via ANKN Records. Confronting the breakdown of a relationship, this song sees the band cutting a toxic person out of their lives.
The song starts off with a dynamic guitar riff that’s quickly joined by some energetic drums. The fast-paced instrumentals lead us into the first verse as the raw, powerful vocals describe the strained relationship. The chorus sees the lead vocalist belting out the lyrics “I don’t ever wanna see your face again” over a background of catchy guitar riffs. The heavy drums that drive us from the chorus into the next verse will have listeners headbanging along. The instrumentals continue to gain power as background vocals and harmonies are added to the mix.
The second chorus leads us into a bridge that starts off with some dreamlike guitars. Drums and elements of distortion are added to pick up the energy before the emotional vocals kick back in. We feel a sense of anticipation as the first lyrics of the next chorus are sung over a minimal background before the music jumps back in at full force. The final chorus is climactic, combining lyrical repetition with background harmonies to solidify the message of the song. You can watch the lyric video below:
Despite being a fairly new band, Bitter Season is already quickly climbing the ranks of the Czech pop punk scene. They played their first show as an opener for Static Dress and Neck Deep in Prague last month and are slated to play Rock for People, a large rock festival in the Czech Republic, next year alongside bands like Bring Me The Horizon and Parkway Drive.
