“It’s my birthday and I’m unhinged” marks the motto for Kat Cunning‘s birthday show at Los Angeles’ intimate Hotel Café last night. Known for debuting up-and-coming artists with a special focus on songwriting, the venue was perfect for Kat’s intimate, hilarious, vulnerable and very authentic set. The queer and non-binary artist took the stage by storm with their vocals reminiscent of Adele and Florence Welch.
Cunning started off the show teaching the crowd to sing verses “just cut me off” with guitarist Nadav Peled. The pair graced the audience with singles “Crave”, “King of Shadow”, “Boys” and couple covers and new release “Bedroom Angel.”
Raw, authentic, kinky, witty – all words that come to mind when describing Kat Cunning’s set that effortlessly encapsulated the packed room. They made a comment about how when people compliment their voice, they respond saying they think anyone could achieve that level of skill with practice. Kat! You don’t know your own talent. The power behind their vocals was present with a sense that they could fill the Hollywood Bowl without breaking a sweat.
Cunning details their story of appreciating and accepting their beautiful, trans leaning self and described the stories of which songs predated them beginning to understand their own gender.
“I wanted to acknowledge and celebrate that trans-mascs are angels among us. I think very highly of myself when I’m writing pop music. It’s important to accept yourself exactly where you are and to find a community that accepts you.”
After performing new release “Bedroom Angel,” cunning declares “I’m aroused” – a sentiment that was appreciated around the room which was filled with friends, family, industry folks, fellow creatives, and fellow kinky LGBTQ+ community members. We were all brought together with Cunning’s erotic satire and powerful, sultry vocals.
Cunning is raw, unapologetic, and taking control of their career and future with whip in hand. Which, by the way, their self embroidered riding crops are available as a hot merch item if you are in the market for stamping “Kat Cunning” on your lover. 😉
If you see Kat Cunning coming to a venue near you, don’t walk – RUN!
