In Their New Single “My Place”, A Story Told Clears Space For What Matters

Date:

From the initial filtered swell of drums, guitars, and synth of “My Place“, one can feel an epic musical declaration coming their way. A Story Told claims a space for themselves with their gorgeously multilayered new single.

Though the song’s chorus could be literally interpreted as the familiar feeling of wanting to kick people out of your house (There’s too many people hanging in my house/So say goodbye and get the hell out/ It’s my place, my place, my place) there of course is a deeper meaning. Vocalist Alex Chaney explains,

“It’s about the ‘moment’ where you decide to create your ‘place’ of inner well-being and begin to focus on the things and people that truly bring value and meaning to your life while eliminating (kicking out) the noise, the things, and people that don’t. I think when you do that, life reveals a new and exciting mindset & opportunities you weren’t able to see before.“

That “take your life back” energy is illustrated through layer upon layer of horns, strings, percussion, glockenspiel, synthesizers, call and response vocals, and much more. At one point, Chaney sings, “It’s not what you want, it’s what you need/That’s why I wrote this symphony” and that is no exaggeration.

One cannot help but draw the Springsteen comparison with the non-stop driving rhythm of massive drums, saxophone, and lyrics set to inspire any and all that listen. It’s especially on the nose with the opening line, “Blue collar/Mundane magic show”. That said, “My Place” escapes the pitfall of being derivative through a modern, meticulous, and bright mix.

A Story Told skillfully captures the message they’re looking to convey in “My Place”. Give it a listen if you’re looking for a kick of inspiration to make space for those things that spark true joy in your heart.
