Since the days they rose From The Fires, grammy-winning rock band Greta Van Fleet has captivated audiences worldwide. The multitalented quartet from Frankenmuth, Michigan has taken the rhythmic chaos of their rooted garage beginnings and curated new fresh techniques, further displaying the musical voyagers this band is becoming. Formed in 2012, the band consists of twin brothers Josh Kiszka (lead vocalist) and Jake Kiszka (guitarist), Sam Kiszka (bassist and keyboardist), and Daniel Wagner (drummer). The band continues to push boundaries, and their new third full studio album, Starcatcher (released last Friday, July 21), is no exception. Demonstrating the band’s musical maturity and cheeky disposition, this album is the ear catching delight you will be queuing up as you take to the road this summer.

Kicking off their Starcatcher world tour earlier this week in Nashville, Tennessee, the band showcased this stellar album in typical Greta Van Fleet fashion. Recorded and produced by Dave Cobb (Brandi Carlile, Slash, and Chris Stapleton) at the legendary RCA Studios in Nashville, each track is raw, fresh, and genuine; speaking to the undeniable prowess of all involved in bringing this album to fruition. A true testament to the band’s creative transparency and trusting of their collective vision. If you’re not a fan of classic rock music or often revert to the continued comparison of their similar sounding predecessors, who helped in etching the ripples in the sand before them, Greta Van Fleet’s latest album may not make it into your musical library. However, for avid listeners and fans of classic rock who enjoy how this band is further etching in the ripple of rock music with generations to come and the industry itself, this newest album may in fact become a favorite on your playlist.

In a recent interview with Billboard News, lead guitarist Jake Kiszka mentions, “after ‘The Battle at Garden’s Gate’ it was time to revert back to the page of rock and roll, what that means, and what that truly means for our generation.” A statement that exhibits how the band mentally aggregates the details known about the classic roots, the imprint their music will make in the future of the genre, and how this thought process shows continued respect for the legends that previously ventured the ever-evolving terrain.

The album features monumental tracks such as, “Meeting The Master” and “Farewell For Now”, with one song that will have you feeling closer to the sun. The delicate riff filled intro of “Waited All Your Life” immediately sends you through the looking glass, the journey beginning with the first step beyond the dreamscape door. This ethereal second track contains harmonious instrumentals, poetic lyrics, and dynamic vocalization. As quick as a sandstorm, you are then caught in the wind, in a flight of immersive seams, when the heart pounding drumming of “Scared The Thread” reverberates through the supersonic tornado that is “Runway Blues”. “You know what I’m talking about”.

Throughout the ten-song collection the band explores the duality of fantasy versus reality and the contrast between light and darkness. Each track embodies a valued component of the surreal story being told within Starcatcher, with no real stand-alone favorite. It will be interesting to see how the band continues to bring this album to life visually during live performances as they take audiences beyond the sound.

“We had this idea that we wanted to tell these stories to build a universe,” says Daniel Wagner. “We wanted to introduce characters and motifs and these ideas that would come about here and there throughout our careers through this world.”

This album is filled with spontaneity and attitude-based tracks, creating an entirely new journey. The band strays from attaining perfection on each song and rather listens to their initial instincts, all while demonstrating noticeable growth. Trailblazing the new age of rock and roll, Greta Van Fleet will be touring Starcatcher throughout the remainder of 2023 and September 2024, undoubtedly taking the world by storm.
