Parisian indie pop group Hoorsees cultivates a cinematic listening experience with their new single “Charming City Life.” This release is the first following their 2022 album A Superior Athlete.
Largely inspired by the band’s hometown, “Charming City Life” features bassist Zoé’s debut as lead vocalist.
The band members themselves described the song as a “disillusioned and auto-tuned melody paying homage to the underclass of the city of light,” which rings true in the beams of brightness radiating from the track’s guitar licks.
In contrast, the opening 13 seconds of Charming City Life offer a slightly more mysterious and dreamlike awakening that borders on 1980s pop. This alluring intro is reminiscent of the beginning of BØRNS’ 2015 track “Dug My Heart.”
This expertly cultivated nostalgia is derived from influences such as Weezer, Pavement, and Modest Mouse. Such inspiration creates a comfortable yet unique blend of sounds–with enthralling drum beats and a complimentary bassline.
Techno-driven embellishments complete the song, truly creating an anthem that fans of any music genre can enjoy. Not to mention, the release came at the perfect time for it to potentially become a defining song of the summer.
