Australia-based band, Joan & The Giants, released their new single “Cool Kid,” an autobiographical track about front-woman Grace Newton-Wordsworth’s childhood struggle to “fit in” and an empowering reminder for all that it’s okay not to.
The accompanying music video, directed by Iain Appleyard, follows Newton-Wordsworth guiding her childhood self through difficult memories of her struggles with sexuality, identity and friendship. From a rigid Catholic upbringing and cold-hearted peers, she begins to march to the beat of her own drum with the help of her future self supporting her along the way. The childhood theme comes full circle with the band jamming in fun costumes and later on joining Newton-Wordsworth’s younger self on stage, breaking the cycle of judgment and reminding us all to just be our truest selves.
Hailing from Perth, the alt-pop quartet came together in 2019 and have since built a strong discography and fan base. With a plethora of singles and an EP titled Me & You (2022), Joan & The Giants have played sold-out tours, large festivals and received nominations and awards for their work, including the 2022 WA Music Award for ‘Best Lyrics’ for single ‘The Weekend.’ The band will embark on their first headline tour of Australia’s East Coast this July.Joan & The Giants: Cool Kid – Coast to Coast Tour Dates:
