Who out there is also having trouble wrapping their head around the fact that it’s been eleven years since BOYS LIKE GIRLS released new music? I mean, think about it. Eleven years since “Gangnam Style,” since One Direction released Up All Night… It’s been a while, but we are glad that the pop rock band have returned. Of course, they have been around this whole time, lead singer Martin Johnson penning tracks for the likes of Ariana Grande and Blink-182, and then there is the ten-year anniversary tour for their debut album that happened in 2016. More recently, BOYS LIKE GIRLS played both weekends of Las Vegas’ inaugural When We Were Young festival, which was a massive hit for all emos old and young. In a way, this festival was the kick-start of an official return for the band, who are just getting started.
Their first single in over ten years, “BLOOD AND SUGAR” is only the beginning of a new era for BOYS LIKE GIRLS. The track contains plenty of the band’s trademark elements, such as catchy hooks, detailed lyrics, and soaring vocals. It feels more grown-up with the neon synths and the clever verses, but fans will still be able to recognize it as a BOYS LIKE GIRLS classic. Aside from the music, the single focuses on the nature of relationships and the roles we play in them. In the end, we are “blood and sugar,” we shouldn’t invest too much. You can check it out below.
About “BLOOD AND SUGAR,” Martin explains,
“I think of it as a relationship with a bunch of empty calories. You’re talking about how human beings are just blood and sugar. You might fear this girl, but we’re all just skin and bones, so why can’t you move on? Sonically and dynamically, I hope it’s like getting shot out of a cannon ten times. It’s something we can’t wait to go out and play.”
You can listen to “BLOOD AND SUGAR” on platforms like Spotify and Apple Music, and be on the lookout for more exciting announcements from BOYS LIKE GIRLS in the coming months.
