MUNA Bring Queer Joy to Toronto

Date:

Amid opening for Taylor Swift on various nights of her current tour, MUNA have also been out on their own headliner across the US and Canada with the Life’s So Fun Tour. Playing to a sold-out crowd at HISTORY in Toronto on May 14th, the band made it clear why they refer to themselves as the “greatest band in the world”.

Nova Twins opened the night and quickly won over the crowd. The duo’s infectious energy and mix of punk and R&B had many banging their heads and waving their hands in the air. By the time MUNA was set to take the stage, the crowd was warmed up and raring to go.

The band was welcomed loudly and wasted no time, jumping straight into favourites “What I Want”, “Number One Fan”, and “Solid”. With a set spanning their entire discography, there was something for every fan such as a fresh take on “Winterbreak”, the “country song for nasty girls” “Taken”, and their newest single “One That Got Away”. Much of the night was also filled with banter and onstage shenanigans. Katie Gavin, Naomi McPherson, and Josette Maskin kept everyone entertained with the three cracking jokes, kicking inflatable horses into the crowd, kissing one another, and chasing each other across the stage. By the end of the band’s 17-song set the room was filled with smiling faces. The crowd was treated to an encore of “I Know a Place” before Nova Twins were welcomed back to the stage to help sing “Silk Chiffon” and end the night. With a set so full of queer joy and the welcoming environment the band creates, it was a fun-filled night that no one in attendance is likely to forget.
