Friday was a night of pop-punk at NYC’s Irving Plaza as The Summer Set made a stop on their Blossom tour.
Singer Taylor Acorn opened the show with massive energy that would pass from band to band throughout the night as she started with “Wishing You Hell” and “I Think I’m in Love.” Originally a country artist, Taylor found her pop-punk roots during the pandemic where she wrote “Coma” and “Certified Depressant” which she played next before closing with “Psycho” and “Shape Shifting.”
Philadelphia band Grayscale took the stage next with a moody set of songs from throughout three albums. Crowd surfing began immediately as the band played “Dirty Bombs” and “Motown.” Their set continued with “In Violet” and “Painkiller Weather” as vocalist Collin Walsh swayed with the mic stand. The band is made of best friends with Dallas Monster and Andrew Kane on guitar, Nick Ventimiglia on bass, and Nick Vent on drums. Grayscale’s set continued with more tracks including “Babylon (Say It to My Face),” “Fever Dream,” and “Atlantic.”
Back and better than ever, The Summer Set took the stage to roaring applause as vocalist Brian Logan Dales sat at a piano to play the intro from their newest album Blossom. After breaking up in 2017, fans thought that was the end of The Summer Set. It took a pandemic to bring them back together and write their fifth studio album inspired by the years during their break where the members bloomed into the people they are today.
Consisting of Brian Logan Dales on vocals, Jess Bowen on drums, and brothers John Gomez on guitar and Stephen Gomez on bass, The Summer Set took the crowd through their many eras starting with “Street Lightning” from Blossom.
The setlist was expansive with 20 songs from all five albums – from taking it back to their debut album Love Like This with “The Boys You Do (Get Back at You),” “Girls Freak Me Out,” and “Chelsea” to their sophomore album Everything’s Fine with “Someone Like You.”
The bands feel-good pop continued with many songs from 2013’s Legendary including “Jukebox (Life Goes On),” “Rescue,” “Legendary,” and “Boomerang” into “Missin’ You,” “All My Friends,” and “Jean Jacket” from Stories For Monday.
New tracks were not forgotten as “Teenagers,” and “Back Together” from Blossom got their time in the setlist. “Back Together” was the bands final song of the night, and was done from the center of the crowd as the foursome took the time to make their way through the crowd and create a circle where they stayed and played the entire song.
Not ones to leave the stage before rejoining for an encore, the band launched into their final three songs of the evening: “Figure Me Out,” “Chelsea,” and “Lightning in a Bottle” before promising to be back soon.
