Greta Van Fleet are “Meeting The Master” Ahead of Upcoming Album, Starcatcher

Greta Van Fleet is back with a silver shimmer after closing the gate on the Dreams in Gold Tour. The band released their single “Meeting The Master” from their new and highly anticipated third album, Starcatcher, set to release on July 21, 2023.

“Meeting The Master” was written and recorded by the band, comprised of vocalist Josh Kiszka, guitarist Jake Kiszka, bassist and keyboardist Sam Kiszka, and drummer Daniel Wagner. Grammy award-winner Dave Cobb produced the new track at RCA Studios in Nashville.

In a press release regarding the single, the band articulates the absurd perspective of devout believers and their reckless pursuit of a wise leader. “The song details the love these fervent followers have for their teacher and their firm belief in his vision,” they explain. “It’s an exotic spiritual journey. A dark comedy that inevitably ends in chaos.” And it does, in an explosive crescendo into worship with frontman Josh Kiszka belting “Blow it up, to give him all of our love” as the world falls apart.

Liquid-like riffs, powerhouse vocals and billowing percussion make “Meeting the Master” a proper introduction to Starcatcher and its existential themes. In a press release regarding the new album, bassist and keyboardist Sam Kiszka said, “It makes me ask a lot of questions, like ‘Where did we come from?’ or ‘What are we doing here?’”

Such questions allude to bigger and more abstract concepts than the band has ever taken on before, as if the world they built in their critically–acclaimed sophomore album, The Battle at Garden’s Gate (2021), was only the beginning. This time around, the gate is opening straight to the stars.

The band announced the release date of Starcatcher on April 6, 2023, just over a week after wrapping their year-long, completely sold out Dreams In Gold Tour in Sacramento, CA. Several tracks from Starcatcher were woven into the setlist at their final show on March 28, 2023, one being “Meeting the Master.” Days later, ten lucky fans opened their mailboxes to reveal a card sent by the band, with each one containing a track title off their new album. The unexpected gifts prompted Tweets subsequently liked by the band’s account (@GretaVanFleet), and the tracklist was confirmed later in a press release. While no new tour dates have been announced, Greta Van Fleet will play several festivals in the US and Mexico through 2024.

If “Meeting the Master” can tell us anything about Starcatcher, we’re in for a journey more intricate than any of Greta Van Fleet‘s previous works.
