When perusing our previous coverage on funk soul band Thee Sacred Souls, there is one word that tends to pop up: love. In addition to the band embodying the kind qualities associated with love, they often explore the topic in their music. Whether it is trying to find it, hold onto it, or let it go, Thee Sacred Souls dismantle all the mysterious workings of love, giving us valuable tracks time after time. For their first release of 2023, the band touch on what it means to earn back some love after it has been ruined.
On “Running Away,” we dive into a world filled with layers of rhythm and sound. Right away, we are treated to dramatic drum patterns and melodic horn riffs that set us up for a little drama. They soon give way to Josh Lane’s sleek and collected vocals, easing us into the heart of the single. We hear about the importance of being true in a relationship and how devastating it is when that commitment is taken for granted. Josh sings, “He’s running away” and “He didn’t mean to break your heart,” showing that relationships are not easy to manage. You can check it out below.
It was only a matter of time before Thee Sacred Souls officially released the single, after previously performing the track at their sold-out shows the past year. Along with a digital release of the single, there will be a physical release on April 7 in the form of a 45. You can check it out here. The B-side features fan-favorite “Love Comes Easy,” which can also be found on the band’s self-titled debut album.
You can listen to “Running Away” on platforms like Spotify, SoundCloud, and Apple Music.
