Indie-pop duo Dreamphone released their newest track, “Stay,” on November 16th, 2022. The song covers topics of indecision and doubt during a tough relationship, displayed through a back-and-forth of Seb Zel’s rapping and Hattie Simon’s ethereal vocals. These two are very talented and ambitious individuals: Zel’s credits span from working with rappers such as F.A.B.L.E to projects for HBO, and Simon has been recognized on tracks by artists such as Alison Shearer, Goose Bolton, and more.
The song begins with Simon’s light vocals over a ringing electrical guitar, later building up with smooth percussion that accompanies the rest of the track nicely. Next is Seb Zel’s rap, featuring lyrics about the difficulty in choosing to leave his relationship: “Getting caught up in the spaces in between us/When every second passing is a year now.” The song continues into the chorus with an exchange where Zel asks his partner to stay while Simon continuously states “why would I?,” eventually saying, “why wouldn’t I stay?”
“Stay” is a captivating and dynamic indie dreamwave track that showcases Simon and Zel’s best attempts at a futuristic pop sound. Their latest EP, Softer, is meant to “feel like life underwater and in slow motion, carrying saccharine and surrealist sensibilities.” It is very clear the duo has a vision for their music, and we can’t wait to see what’s next.
