GAYLE gives us another breakup bop with “ALEX”

Date:

GAYLE
’s star just keeping rising, and her latest single, “ALEX,” only adds fuel to the skyrocket. The artist is no stranger to breakup songs (“ABCDEFU” anyone?), and even though we wish her nothing but happiness, it’s hard to deny that sometimes it feels really good to hear angst turn into a bop.

GAYLE began writing songs from a young age and subsequently moved to Nashville in order to pursue a career in music. Clearly, it was the right path: at only 18 years old GAYLE is an Atlantic Records recording artist; a viral TikTok sensation; has over 1 billion streams on Spotify; and has released 2 EPs… all since 2021.

“ALEX” follows in the footsteps of those successes, presenting the listener with subtle electric guitar plucks and the artist’s strong vocal before swelling into a full-on pop/rock chorus. “I gotta break up with Alex / It’s gotten way too dramatic / I gotta tell him that it’s over / We’re past the point of closure / I’ve gotta break up with Alex.”

Of the song, GAYLE says:

“i was writing with some friends and telling them the story of when i realized i needed to break up with my ex, and one of them said, ‘break up with alex’ would be a great song. i told them that the last thing i’d ever want to do is to put my ex’s name in a song, so then they said to me, ‘cool, we’ll write it without you and you’ll wish you’d written it with us.’ and so here we are.”
