We all know about the idea of going out into the world and becoming someone. It seems like if you don’t make something of yourself, you’re just wasting time. While that’s not true, it is hard to shake off the pressure to find your worth and fulfill your purpose in life. At least, this is what we hear on “Everybody Loves You When You’re Dead,” the latest single from Tuk Smith & The Restless Hearts.
An epic power ballad with climactic instrumentals and fierce vocals, “Everybody Loves You When You’re Dead” attempts to take the weight off such expectations. With a sense of dejection, Tuk Smith recounts his needs and wants, singing, “I wanna punch right through the glass / Like a broken hero from the past” and “I know there’s more than I can see.” He gains some confidence when we get to the choruses, however, as he declares, “Nobody knows you when you’re down and out / And what comes around goes back around.” It all brings us to our main point of the song, where he sings, “In the end, everybody loves you when you’re dead.” You can check it out below.
Telling us more about “Everybody Loves You When You’re Dead,” Tuk Smith shares,
“I was channeling my favorite 70s glam gods on this track, for sure. I woke up one morning with the phrase ‘everybody loves you when you’re dead’ running through my head, so I sat down and the piano and the song kind of wrote itself. I had been struggling with the death of a friend, and I was flooded with existential thoughts. It’s not necessarily a song about death, per se, it’s a bit more layered with some social commentary thrown in there. Personally, I look at it as more a freedom song.”
“Everybody Loves You When You’re Dead” is the second single after “Ballad Of A Misspent Youth” to be released from Tuk Smith & The Restless Hearts’ upcoming debut album, Ballad Of A Misspent Youth. The album is due for release November 4.
