5 Seconds of Summer Explores Themes of Nostalgia and Growth With Fifth Studio Album; “5SOS5”

Date:

Two years after the critically acclaimed CALM, 5 Seconds of Summer have finally returned with their fifth studio album, 5SOS5. This album marks a new stage for 5SOS; not only does it represent a new era and sound for the band, but this is the first time they have released a record independently since their EP Somewhere New in 2012.

5SOS5 is a 19-track album, taking elements from previous records and lightening them up for a brighter, more airy sound. The first release, “COMPLETE MESS,” sets the pace for the album, a slower, chilled-out track with 4-part harmonies and synthy guitars. It is followed by the reminiscent “Easy For You To Say” and “Bad Omens,” highlighting the anticipation of a relationship that was soon to end.

The record continues with faster-paced, upbeat songs like “HAZE,” a groovy track with notable experimental sounds, and “Best Friends,” showcasing the band’s appreciation for one another. “Bleach,” “Red Line,” and “Mood Swings” follow, containing gripping lyrics and melancholic melodies, detailing the struggles with a sense of self and toxicity in relationships.

“Older” is one of the album’s standout tracks. With Luke Hemmings and his fiancé Sierra Deaton featured, “Older” is a bittersweet piano ballad about not wanting to grow older without having your loved one beside you. Luke and Sierra sorrowfully sing the heart-wrenching lyrics: “I don’t wanna get older / Without your head on my shoulder / On the day that you leave me / I’ll forever be bleeding, love.”

The album finally finishes with “TEARS!,” displaying the yearning to feel alive through Hood and Irwin’s contrasting vocals and punchy percussion. While this song isn’t as compelling as some others on the album, it is nonetheless a strong finisher.

5SOS5 is 5 Seconds of Summer’s most cohesive and outstanding album to date. Each track seamlessly transitions into the next, even with a total of 19 songs. After 10 years as a band, 5 Seconds of Summer continues to improve on their previous works. 5SOS5 is just that; a carefully-crafted album showcasing the band’s maturity both personally and musically into the style they have now mastered.

5SOS5 is now available on all streaming platforms.
