We Are Scientists explore an “Operator Error” on new single

Date:

Being in the game as long as they have, indie rock duo We Are Scientists know a thing or two on how to make “catchy, feel-good indie rock that will stick on your brain.”  Last year, they released their HUFFY LP, which received much acclaim from tastemakers like Consequence, AllMusic, and The Aquarian.  It was even described as “a bombastic collection of high-octane bops that give fresh air to the group’s established sound” by Allston Pudding.  Now that fans have had time to indulge in HUFFY, We Are Scientists are ready to crank out more bops, starting with their new single “Operator Error.”

Containing vocals that dip and peak in all the right places and a breezy indie rock spirit, “Operator Error” is another special We Are Scientists hit.  It deals with the conflict of when to speak up vs when to stay quiet in conversation.  Throughout the single, vocalist Keith Murray relays lines like, “If you can’t keep a secret, just keep quiet” and “You keep on saying that you don’t get the joke / So why the hell are you laughing? / I could explain, but you prefer that I don’t,” almost creating arguments in his mind.  It all leads up to the chorus where he sings, “Cut the shit / Enough of this!”  You can check it out below.

Telling us more about the track, Keith shares,

“I have a tendency to deliver hot takes and to get extraordinarily overheated about utterly inconsequential things. I got into a multi-hour argument over whether Top Gun: Maverick is a halfway decent movie.  Maybe it’s weird, then, that I also tend to be pretty sanguine over big issues.  On important matters, I like to keep quiet, to listen to everyone else’s take, and to silently build my own bullet-proof argument, which nobody else will ever hear.   I operate in dual modes – one where I’m apt to deliver my dumb opinion with little provocation, and one in which it’s almost impossible to get me to say what I’m really thinking.  It’s probably a pretty frustrating character trait for the people who are trying to engage me in consequential conversation, and I apologize to my friends and my enemies, alike.

You can listen to “Operator Error” on SoundCloud, Apple Music, and Spotify.
