Weekly Roundup: September 19

Date:

Every week the Melodic staff assembles a Weekly Roundup playlist of songs we can’t stop listening to.
Here are some of the highlights:

1. “Hold The Girl” – Rina Sawayama
“Sawayama’s grief is not invisible, not unimportant, not erasable—but she is finding ways to forgive, nonetheless. Most importantly, she is learning to forgive herself. The titular track… delves into younger, self-effacing tendencies and Rina’s desire to reunite with the imaginative, innocent parts of herself.”
– Marisa Graham

2. “Silence Is Golden” – The Beths
“The New Zealand quartet returns with their 3rd LP, [Expert In A Dying Field,] an electrifying collection of songs that showcase Elizabeth Stokes’ songwriting prowess. Throughout the album, she asks, ‘How does it feel to be an expert in a dying field? How do you know it’s over when you can’t let go?‘”
– Lexi Whitney

3.  “Noise in the Forest” – Ripe
“With ‘Noise in the Forest,’ Ripe give us another exultant-sounding track that defies its conflicted lyrics. Over the feel-good groove coming from the steady percussion, lead singer Robbie Wulfsohn depicts the fear and uncertainty that occurs in times of anger or frustration. Tenderly, he sings, ‘You wait for the sunlight that comes after the rain / Hope you know I’m grateful every times you stay,‘ aware that his actions have pushed people away in the past. In the end, he finds, ‘It’s just noise in the forest / Can’t tell the shadows from the trees,‘ pushing away that aggression.”
– Christine Sloman

4. “Criminal” – Kat Leigh
“Kat Leigh may be new to the scene, but she performs with the confidence of a natural-born star. She really shines with her latest track, ‘Criminal,’ which she explains was inspired by her conservative upbringing. Leigh remarks, ‘… my darker style was not something [my family] took lightly for much of my life. They would throw away certain decorations I had in my room if they felt it was ‘anti-religion’ or even ‘anti-republican.’ They would say I only liked these movies and listened to this music because I ‘hadn’t found God.'”
