Back in 2020, sunsetto shared a clip of his debut single, “don’t leave,” on Instagram, unaware of the buzz it would generate. The vibrant single got hundreds of thousands of streams, prompting the singer, songwriter, and producer to follow it up with “good connection” and “downtown.” The tracks helped establish sunsetto’s genre-less sound, shrouding fans in a comforting blend of R&B, alternative, and pop music. Continuing to roll out fresh and limitless tracks before the release of his debut EP, sunsetto is back with the iridescent “drugs are for fun.”
Containing the twinkling spirit of a catchy pop banger, “drugs are for fun” attempts to mask the solemn nuances found in the lyrics. Over the melodic sounds of the synth and rhythm guitar, sunsetto describes how a seemingly innocent night of partying may not be so innocent after all. Through bright vocals, he sings, “Let’s not pretend that the club is a place you get drunk with your friends / And let’s not pretend that the drugs are for fun and you don’t need them,” filling us in on the whole story. You can check it out below.
About the single, sunsetto shares,
“I wrote the song in LA last November about coping mechanisms that formed from seemingly harmless fun with partying, but that led to some important conversations and changes in my life. The song is disguised as an upbeat catchy pop anthem, but at its core, is a sobering conversation between two people. Nobody is perfect, and we’re not all lucky enough to have someone in our life that cares enough to tell us we need to make a change.”
You can listen to “drugs are for fun” on platforms like SoundCloud, Spotify, and Apple Music.
