Last year at this time, we had yet to hear from upcoming singer-songwriter Goldie Vargas. The 21-year-old artist was hard at work crafting her debut EP, Golden, with producer Adam Gurr, keeping the details on the down-low. Now that we are halfway through 2022, we have become well-acquainted with Goldie’s summery and reflective sound, as she has given us singles like “Strawberry Kisses” and “Moving in Reverse.” Just before the release of Golden, Goldie is treating fans to another expressive single from the project with “Canyon.”
Written during the aftermath of a breakup, “Canyon” is about missing the other person and the relationship, but also missing the way you were before the relationship even happened. Driven by the melancholy sounds of an acoustic guitar, the track has a sentimental feel, complete with Goldie’s pure vocals and honest lyrics. Pensively, she sings, “Take it as a compliment, I still love you / I’m well aware I write too many songs about you” and “Running through the fields, I miss the girl I used to feel,” wanting to go back in time. You can check it out below.
Expanding on “Canyon,” Goldie shares,
“‘Canyon’ is about the personal conflict of missing the person you were with and the relationship you once had, but also missing the person you were before you met them. The entire song physically feels, to me at least, like you are running in a field towards yourself trying to get back to your roots. I find it incredibly empowering and self-loving, despite being a breakup song.”
You can listen to “Canyon” on platforms like Spotify and Apple Music.
Golden is set to be released July 28.
