Pom Pom Squad brings Brooklyn to Chicago

Date:

Brooklyn rock/grunge band Pom Pom Squad made their way to Chicago’s Schubas Tavern with fellow Brooklynite Chloe Lilac.

Melodic Alt-Pop vocalist and guitarist Chloe Lilac opened the show with her new track “lily’s backyard” from her 2022 EP you were good to me, and two singles released in 2021 – “10 things” and “19.” Chloe brought along friends Khristian Royce on drums and Celia Bolgatz on guitar as her touring band, and they continued their set with 2022’s “last week,” and 2020’s “MODERATION,” and “HERE’S YOUR SONG” before closing their set with “DOUCHEBAG,” “how does your girlfriend feel about it,” and “Summer.”

Originally the solo project of frontwomen Mia Berrin, Pom Pom Squad has evolved into a three-piece band with Mia on vocals and guitar, Shelby Keller on drums, and Alex Mercuri on guitar. Touring in support of their 2021 debut album Death of a Cheerleader, the band brought along Alina Sloan on bass, and Camellia Hartman on violin. Mia’s romantic lyrics mixed with a brash delivery has established the band in the indie rock/grunge scene.

Pom Pom Squad’s setlist consisted of ten of fourteen tracks on the album Death of a Cheerleader, as the band opened with “Lux” and “Drunk Voicemail” with Mia at the helm on her guitar, before they performed one of their earliest tracks “Protection Spells.”

The band once again jumped into tracks off their debut album with Berrin forgoing her guitar for the mic, and room to jump around as the band played “Head Cheerleader,” “Cake,” and “Shame Reactions” followed by “Forever” and “Red With Love.”

Partway through their set a fan passed out in the crowd, and Mia immediately stopped their performance until the fan was once again conscious – even going into the crowd to make sure they were okay.

The night continued with more tracks from the bands 2019 EP Ow – “Cherry Blossom,” “Again,” and “Heavy Heavy.” Closing their set with “Crying,” the band led into final song “Be Good” before Mia grabbed a pile of roses on stage and threw them out to the crowd.
