Weekly Roundup: May 9

Date:

Every week the Melodic staff assembles a Weekly Roundup playlist of songs we can’t stop listening to. On today’s playlist we have all sorts of vibes and themes (for example, you’ll want to keep reading if you’re a big fan of The Office).
Here are some of the highlights:

1. “Memories” – YUNGBLUD ft. WILLOW
Another catchy pop-punk/emo gem from YUNGBLUD and WILLOW. My assertion that YUNGBLUD is basically the modern day Billy Idol is still strong after hearing this single; just listen to that solo around the 2 minute mark. WILLOW also holds her own (as always), packing a nice punch with her vocal delivery that makes this song the perfect angst-ridden duet.

2. “Something” – Sarah Mootz ft. Elijah Johnston
Fans of Sydney Sprague, Phoebe Bridgers, or Conor Oberst will probably dig this one (we know that we do). Mootz has a rasp to her vocal that is both edgy and endearing, and paired with Elijah Johnston the two weave a story that draws us in every time they reach the chorus: “There’s something that you want to tell me/ Is there something that you want to hear?”

3.  “f*ck myself” – Manda Malina
This song is like the vengeful, fire-spitting twin sister of Hailee Steinfeld’s 2015 single “Love Myself” and it slaps. Perfect post-breakup-spinning-around-your-room-singing-into-your-hairbrush-movie-montage material.

4. “Put It Down” – Grocer
This song had our attention immediately: a slightly disjointed bass line meets with a beat that soon makes way for a hypnotic vocal delivery: “Rain falls down/ Rain falls down/ Rain falls down…” It’s almost as if you can see the words circling your brain when suddenly- *crash*- the instrumentation breaks down. It doesn’t take long to put itself back together though, and the rest of the track follows suit, making for an entertaining, and totally awesome, listening experience.

5. “Us Again” – KellyMarie
This is the third single from KellyMarie’s upcoming concept album that is completely based on The Office. For those familiar with the show (which, if you aren’t by now, you must have been living under a rock for the past 20 years), this song is supposed to be from Karen’s POV when Jim and her are interviewing in NYC. Most of us know how that ended up… but the lyrics stay in the territory of blissful hope and endless possibilities, making it a cheery bop.
